I am a 6th grade science teacher who is always looking for good materials and lessons for my class. I was wondering if you could recommend anything that teaches about the benefits of plastics?

Answer:
Dear To Sir With Love - Thanks for this question! We know of a great program that has just been released that should work for you.
Our friends at the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) have recently produced a multi-media kit for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade elementary school teachers. The newly developed package, "Dr. Polly Polymer and the Fantastic Plastics Factory," is an educational program that focuses on polymers and plastics. You can view a preview of this program on the Internet by pointing your browser to: www.4spe.org/DR_POLLY.HTML
The program is made up of a teacher's instructional guide, student activity copymasters and an original supporting video (part live and part animation) that centers around four student challenges. Each challenge has an easy-to-use lesson plan that involves students in exciting curriculum-relevant learning activities.
The complete kit costs $45.00 plus shipping and handling charges of $2.03, totaling $47.03.

To order this kit, either call the SPE’s book department at (203) 740-5475 or order online at:

The Plastics Group has worked closely with the SPE for years - in fact, our own ResinKit plastics identification tool is sold through the SPE bookstore. Jim Toner, Promotion Director of the SPE, describes the new program as a "positive plastics learning tool - one we hope that young students in school systems across the country will benefit directly from." Jim also mentioned that the SPE Foundation is raising financial support to send 2,000 kits to teachers all over the country during 2000. Return to the Ask Professor Polymer Archive
